PROFIBUS
PROFIBUS is a fieldbus standardised in IEC 61158 and managed by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International, used to connect controllers with remote I/O, drives and instruments in factory automation (PROFIBUS DP) and process automation (PROFIBUS PA).
PROFIBUS DP (Decentralised Peripherals) uses RS-485 or fibre optic physical layers with master-slave communication, in which a master cyclically exchanges input and output data with its slaves, and token passing between multiple masters. PROFIBUS PA uses the MBP physical layer defined in IEC 61158-2, which carries power and data on the same two wires and supports intrinsically safe installations, and connects to DP through segment couplers. Device capabilities are described in GSD files.
PROFIBUS originated in Germany in the late 1980s and became one of the most widely installed fieldbuses, particularly in Europe, across manufacturing, process industries, water treatment and building services. PROFIBUS PA is used for transmitters, analysers and valve positioners in chemical and pharmaceutical plants. Application profiles such as PROFIdrive and PROFIsafe standardise drive control and safety communication.
PROFIBUS DP networks require correct termination at both segment ends, appropriate cable and limited stub lengths, and the permissible segment length decreases as the baud rate increases. Many plants are migrating to PROFINET, which comes from the same organisation and reuses its profiles and engineering concepts, while many installed PROFIBUS networks remain in service. Diagnostic tools and oscilloscope checks are used to verify signal quality.
Key points
- Fieldbus standardised in IEC 61158, managed by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International
- PROFIBUS DP uses RS-485 or fibre for factory automation
- PROFIBUS PA uses bus-powered MBP and suits intrinsically safe installations
- Profiles such as PROFIdrive and PROFIsafe standardise device behaviour
- PROFINET is its Ethernet-based successor from the same organisation
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
