PROFINET
PROFINET is an industrial Ethernet standard from PROFIBUS & PROFINET International, standardised in IEC 61158 and IEC 61784, for real-time exchange of data between controllers and field devices such as I/O, drives and robots.
PROFINET IO uses a provider-consumer model in which an IO controller exchanges cyclic data with IO devices, configured from GSDML device description files. Standard TCP/IP and UDP are used for configuration and acyclic services, while real-time (RT) cyclic data travels in prioritised Ethernet frames that bypass the IP stack. Isochronous real-time (IRT) adds time-scheduled transmission in hardware for motion applications that need very short, low-jitter cycles.
PROFINET is widely used in factory and process automation, especially with Siemens controllers, and it carries the PROFIBUS profiles forward: PROFIsafe for safety, PROFIdrive for drives and PROFIenergy for energy management. Devices can be connected in line, star, tree or ring topologies using switches integrated into devices, and the Media Redundancy Protocol provides ring redundancy.
Conformance classes define increasing levels of capability, and devices are certified through PI. Devices are identified by names as well as IP addresses, and the Discovery and Configuration Protocol (DCP) assigns them during commissioning. Network planning considers update times, topology, traffic load and diagnostics. Classic PROFINET traffic is not authenticated, so segmentation and access control following IEC 62443 remain important.
Key points
- Industrial Ethernet standard managed by PROFIBUS & PROFINET International
- RT frames carry cyclic data; IRT adds hardware scheduling for motion
- Devices are described by GSDML files and identified by device names
- Carries profiles such as PROFIsafe, PROFIdrive and PROFIenergy
- Supports ring redundancy through the Media Redundancy Protocol
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
