Remote I/O (Distributed I/O)

Remote I/O places input and output modules close to field devices and links them to the controller over a fieldbus or industrial Ethernet network, replacing long bundles of individual signal cables with a single communication connection.

A remote I/O station consists of a communication interface, or coupler, and a set of discrete, analogue or specialist modules, mounted in a local cabinet or directly on the machine in IP67-rated housings. The controller exchanges process data with the station cyclically over networks such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT or PROFIBUS, and the program addresses remote channels much like local ones.

Distributing I/O reduces wiring cost and cabinet size, shortens commissioning and makes modular machines easier to build, ship and expand. In process plants, remote I/O in field enclosures, including designs for hazardous areas, reduces home-run cabling to the control room. Diagnostics from the station, such as module faults or wire breaks, help maintenance staff locate problems quickly.

Network design determines update time, so engineers consider cycle time, the number of stations, topology, redundancy and how outputs behave when communication is lost, typically through configurable substitute values. Environmental ratings, power distribution and grounding must suit the location. Safety signals require safety-rated remote I/O using a safety protocol such as PROFIsafe, CIP Safety or Safety over EtherCAT.

Key points

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
