Fieldbus
A fieldbus is a digital industrial network that connects controllers with field devices such as sensors, actuators, drives and remote I/O, replacing individual point-to-point wiring with a shared, deterministic communication link.
Fieldbuses transmit process data cyclically between a controller and many devices over a single cable, together with acyclic services for parameterisation and diagnostics. Most classic fieldbuses use serial physical layers such as RS-485 or CAN, with master-slave polling, token passing or producer-consumer schemes to make timing predictable. Each device has an address and a description file, such as a GSD file for PROFIBUS or an EDS file for DeviceNet and CANopen, that tells engineering tools what data it exchanges.
Fieldbuses spread from the late 1980s as alternatives to parallel wiring and 4–20 mA loops. The IEC 61158 series standardises fieldbus communication, and IEC 61784 defines communication profile families. Well-known examples include PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, CANopen, Modbus RTU, CC-Link, AS-Interface and FOUNDATION Fieldbus. Many have been complemented or succeeded by industrial Ethernet protocols.
Choosing a fieldbus depends on the controller platform, device availability, required cycle time, cable length, topology and hazardous-area needs. Correct termination, cable type, shielding and grounding are essential, as many communication faults trace back to physical installation. Diagnostic tools and bus analysers help locate faults. Fieldbus segments should be protected from unauthorised access, because classic protocols lack authentication.
Key points
- Shared digital network replacing point-to-point field wiring
- Cyclic process data plus acyclic parameters and diagnostics
- IEC 61158 and IEC 61784 standardise fieldbus protocols and profiles
- Examples include PROFIBUS, CANopen, DeviceNet and Modbus RTU
- Termination, cabling and grounding are frequent fault sources
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
