Industrial Ethernet
Industrial Ethernet is the use of Ethernet networking, with ruggedised hardware and real-time protocol extensions, to connect controllers, drives, I/O and supervisory systems on the factory floor and in process plants.
Industrial Ethernet protocols build on standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet but add mechanisms for deterministic, cyclic exchange of process data. Some, such as Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP, run over standard TCP/IP and UDP/IP; others, such as PROFINET RT, use their own Ethernet frame types for faster cycles; and EtherCAT and PROFINET IRT use specialised hardware or scheduling to reach very short, low-jitter cycle times for motion control.
Ethernet allows control data, diagnostics, configuration and IT services to share common infrastructure, offers higher bandwidth than classic fieldbuses and simplifies integration with SCADA, MES and cloud systems. Industrial switches, connectors such as M12 and cables are rated for temperature, vibration, electromagnetic interference and ingress protection. Topologies include line, star and ring, with redundancy protocols such as the Media Redundancy Protocol (IEC 62439-2) or Device Level Ring for EtherNet/IP.
Network design must consider traffic segmentation with VLANs, multicast handling, quality of service, time synchronisation using IEEE 1588 and cybersecurity, since connected networks expose controllers to IT threats. IEC 62443 provides security guidance, and the Purdue model is widely used to structure network zones. Time-Sensitive Networking, a set of IEEE 802.1 standards, adds deterministic capabilities to standard Ethernet, and several industrial protocols are adopting it.
Key points
- Standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet with real-time protocol extensions
- Examples include PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT and Modbus TCP
- Ruggedised switches and M12 connectors suit harsh environments
- Ring redundancy options include MRP (IEC 62439-2) and DLR
- Needs segmentation and IEC 62443-based security measures
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
