Quality, Reliability & Maintenance
ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system, used by organisations of any size or sector to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
ISO 9001 is part of the ISO 9000 family, which also includes ISO 9000 for fundamentals and vocabulary and ISO 9004 for guidance on sustained success. It follows the common high-level structure of ISO management system standards, with clauses on the context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. The standard is based on the process approach, the plan-do-check-act cycle and risk-based thinking.
Organisations are certified to ISO 9001 by accredited third-party certification bodies following audits, and certification is often a prerequisite for supplying industrial customers and public bodies. It forms the basis of sector-specific standards such as IATF 16949 for automotive production and AS9100 for aviation, space and defence. Requirements include determining customer requirements, controlling documented information, managing external providers, controlling production and non-conforming output, ensuring valid and traceable measurement, internal audit, management review and corrective action.
ISO 9001 specifies what a quality management system must achieve, not how to achieve it, so implementations vary widely. Certification shows conformity with the standard, not that every product is defect-free. The standard is revised periodically, so organisations should work to the current edition and its transition arrangements. The quality management principles behind it include customer focus, leadership, engagement of people and evidence-based decision making.
