Metrology

Metrology is the science of measurement and its application, covering the definition of units, the realisation of measurement standards, traceability, measurement uncertainty and the practical measurement of products and processes in industry.

Metrology is often divided into three areas. Scientific or fundamental metrology establishes and maintains the units of the International System of Units (SI) and the highest-level measurement standards. Legal metrology covers measurements regulated by law, such as weighing instruments used in trade and fuel dispensers. Industrial or applied metrology ensures that measuring instruments used in manufacturing and testing are suitable, calibrated and used correctly. The International Vocabulary of Metrology, known as the VIM, defines the core terms.

In manufacturing, metrology underpins quality control, process capability, interchangeability of parts and fair trade. Dimensional metrology uses instruments ranging from callipers and micrometers to gauges, optical systems and coordinate measuring machines, while other fields cover mass, force, torque, pressure, temperature, electrical and flow measurement. National metrology institutes, such as NPL in the United Kingdom, PTB in Germany, NIST in the United States and CSIR-NPL in India, maintain national standards and disseminate them through calibration services.

Every measurement has uncertainty, and a result is meaningful only when that uncertainty is known and small enough for the decision being made. Measurement capability depends on the instrument, method, environment, operator and the part itself. Traceability through an unbroken chain of calibrations to SI units, measurement system analysis and controlled conditions, such as the 20 degrees Celsius reference temperature for dimensional measurement, are central practices.
