Calibration
Calibration is the operation of comparing a measuring instrument's indications with values provided by a measurement standard of known uncertainty, establishing the relationship between them and, where needed, informing adjustment or correction.
During calibration, the instrument under test measures reference standards or known quantities at several points across its range, and the deviations are recorded together with the measurement uncertainty of the calibration. Calibration is not the same as adjustment: an instrument may be calibrated and found within tolerance, adjusted and then recalibrated, or left as it is with corrections applied. A calibration certificate documents the results, uncertainty, reference standards used and environmental conditions.
Calibration gives measurements metrological traceability, an unbroken chain of comparisons linking an instrument through higher-level standards to national standards and ultimately to SI units. Quality management standards such as ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 require measuring equipment used to verify product conformity to be calibrated or verified at specified intervals, and IATF 16949 adds requirements for internal and external laboratories. Calibration laboratories demonstrate competence through accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025.
Calibration intervals are set from manufacturer recommendations, usage, stability history and risk, and should be reviewed when instruments are often found out of tolerance. When an instrument is found out of tolerance, the organisation must assess the validity of previous measurements and any affected product. Instrument identification, calibration status labels, controlled storage and careful handling all form part of an effective calibration system.
Key points
- Compares an instrument with standards of known uncertainty.
- Calibration is not the same as adjustment.
- Provides traceability through an unbroken chain to SI units.
- Calibration laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.
