Quality, Reliability & Maintenance
IATF 16949
IATF 16949 is the automotive quality management system standard published by the International Automotive Task Force, used together with ISO 9001 to define requirements for organisations producing parts for the automotive industry.
IATF 16949 replaced the earlier ISO/TS 16949 technical specification and is not a standalone standard: it supplements ISO 9001 with automotive-specific requirements, and both must be met. The additional requirements cover areas such as product safety, customer-specific requirements, products with embedded software, warranty management, contingency planning, supplier development, manufacturing process design, total productive maintenance, measurement system analysis, statistical tools, error-proofing and problem solving.
Certification is carried out by certification bodies recognised by the IATF under the rules of its automotive certification scheme, and many vehicle manufacturers require it of their production and service part suppliers. The standard applies to sites where customer-specified production, service or accessory parts are manufactured, and supporting functions such as design centres can be included in the scope. The AIAG core tools, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC, are closely linked to its requirements.
IATF 16949 is demanding, with emphasis on defect prevention, reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain, and the effectiveness of processes rather than documentation alone. Customer-specific requirements published by each vehicle manufacturer can add significant obligations. The IATF issues sanctioned interpretations and frequently asked questions that clarify requirements, so organisations should consult the current versions.
