ISO 55000 Asset Management Standards

ISO 55000 is a family of international standards for asset management: ISO 55000 gives the overview, principles and terminology, ISO 55001 specifies requirements for an asset management system, and ISO 55002 gives guidance on applying it.

The ISO 55000 series treats asset management as the coordinated activity of an organisation to realise value from assets. It developed from the British publicly available specification PAS 55 and follows the common ISO management system structure, so ISO 55001 can be integrated with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and other management system standards. Requirements cover the organisational context, leadership, a strategic asset management plan, risk-based planning, support and competence, operation, performance evaluation and improvement.

Organisations with large physical asset bases, such as utilities, transport, energy, mining, manufacturing and public infrastructure, use the standards to align maintenance and investment decisions with business objectives, balancing cost, risk and performance over the asset life cycle. Certification to ISO 55001 by accredited bodies is available, and some regulators and public bodies expect asset management practices consistent with the series.

ISO 55001 specifies what an asset management system must achieve, not which maintenance strategies or software to use; methods such as reliability-centred maintenance, condition monitoring and EAM systems are tools for meeting it. Implementation requires reliable asset data, cross-functional ownership and a clear line of sight from organisational objectives to day-to-day maintenance work. Standards are revised periodically, so the current editions should be consulted.
