CNC Machine (Computer Numerical Control)

A CNC machine is a machine tool whose axis motions, spindle and auxiliary functions are controlled by a computer that executes a stored part program, usually written in G-code, instead of by hand wheels and levers.

A CNC machine combines a mechanical machine tool with a control unit, servo drives, motors and position feedback devices. The control reads the part program block by block, calculates the required tool path and sends position commands to the axis drives, which move the slides in a closed loop using encoder or scale feedback. The same control also switches the spindle, coolant, tool changer and other auxiliary devices.

CNC technology is used on milling machines and machining centres, lathes and turning centres, grinders, electrical discharge machines, routers and cutting machines. It grew out of numerical control (NC) in the 1950s and replaced hard-wired logic with a computer. Aerospace, automotive, medical device, mould and die and general engineering shops rely on CNC because the same program can produce identical parts repeatedly with little manual intervention.

Achievable accuracy depends on machine construction, thermal stability, tooling, workholding and the quality of the program, not on the control alone. Programs are usually produced in CAM software and checked by simulation before cutting. Machine safety is covered by standards such as ISO 16090-1 for machining centres and milling machines and ISO 23125 for turning machines, and the OEM documentation governs operation and maintenance.
