Machining Centre (VMC and HMC)

A machining centre is a CNC milling machine with an automatic tool changer, usually enclosed. Vertical machining centres (VMC) have a vertical spindle; horizontal machining centres (HMC) have a horizontal spindle and often a pallet changer.

A machining centre combines three or more CNC axes, a motorised or belt-driven spindle, an automatic tool changer with a magazine of tools and an enclosure with coolant and chip handling. In a VMC the spindle axis is vertical and the part sits on a table below it. In an HMC the spindle is horizontal, the part is usually mounted on a rotary pallet or tombstone, and an automatic pallet changer lets the next part be loaded while the current one is cut.

VMCs are widely used for plates, moulds, prototypes and general job-shop work. HMCs suit higher-volume production of prismatic parts such as housings and manifolds, because several faces can be machined in one setup and chips fall away from the work. Fourth and fifth axes extend both types to multi-face and complex parts.

Selection depends on axis travels, spindle taper, speed and power, magazine capacity, rigidity, accuracy and automation options. Test conditions for machining centres are covered in the ISO 10791 series, and safety requirements in ISO 16090-1. Installation, operation and maintenance follow the OEM documentation.
