Automatic Tool Changer (ATC)

An automatic tool changer exchanges tool holders between the spindle and a tool magazine on command from the CNC program, allowing one machine to use many tools in a single unattended cycle.

When the program requests a new tool, typically with a T word and an M06 command on FANUC-style machines, the spindle orients and stops, the drawbar releases the current holder and the changer swaps it for the next one. Magazines include carousel or umbrella types, chain magazines and rack or matrix storage for large tool counts. Double-arm changers swap tools in one motion, and many magazines prepare the next tool while the current one cuts.

ATCs are what turn a CNC mill into a machining centre, enabling complete parts to be machined with dozens of tools without operator intervention. Large magazines support high-mix production, sister tools for tool life management and long unattended runs with pallet systems.

The control keeps a table linking tool numbers to magazine pockets, which may be fixed or random. Oversized or heavy tools may need adjacent empty pockets or have weight and length limits set by the builder. Wrong tool data can cause collisions in the magazine or work area. Some systems read tool data from RFID chips in the holders. ATC adjustment and recovery after a failed change should follow OEM documentation and be carried out by qualified personnel.
