Machine Tool Spindle

The spindle is the precision rotating assembly of a machine tool that holds and drives the cutting tool on a mill, or the workpiece on a lathe. Its bearings, drive, taper interface and clamping set much of the machine's capability.

A spindle consists of a shaft running in preloaded precision bearings, commonly angular contact ball bearings, driven by a belt, gears, a direct coupling or a built-in motor in a motorised spindle. On milling machines a drawbar with spring packs clamps the tool holder in a taper interface such as a 7/24 steep taper, an HSK hollow taper shank or a polygonal taper shank, and a hydraulic or pneumatic unit releases it for tool changes. Encoders give the control speed and angular position for orientation, rigid tapping and C-axis work.

Spindle characteristics, including maximum speed, power and torque curves and the taper size, determine which tools and materials a machine can cut effectively. High-speed motorised spindles suit light, fast cuts in aluminium and moulds, while geared or high-torque spindles suit heavy cuts in steel and titanium.

Heat from bearings and motors causes thermal growth that affects dimensions, which is why warm-up routines and thermal compensation are used. Imbalanced tools, crashes and contamination shorten bearing life. Tool balance is commonly specified with balance quality grades from ISO 21940-11. Spindle repair and rebuilding should follow OEM documentation and be performed by qualified specialists.
