CNC Controller
A CNC controller is the computer and software that interprets a part program, plans and interpolates tool motion, commands the servo drives in closed loop and coordinates machine logic, operator interface and data interfaces.
The controller reads program blocks, applies offsets and tool compensation, plans feed and acceleration with look-ahead, and interpolates the path into small position commands for each axis. Servo drives close position, velocity and current loops using encoder or scale feedback. An integrated PLC handles machine logic such as tool changers, doors, lubrication and coolant, and the operator panel provides program editing, offsets entry, jogging and diagnostics.
Every CNC machine tool has a controller, either from a control specialist or developed by the machine builder. Widely known control families include FANUC, Siemens SINUMERIK, Heidenhain, Mitsubishi Electric and builder-developed controls such as Okuma OSP and Mazak Mazatrol. The control determines the G-code dialect, cycles, macro capability and data interfaces available on the machine.
Machine behaviour depends heavily on builder-set parameters, and parameter or logic changes can affect accuracy and safety, so they are governed by OEM documentation and qualified personnel. Data access for monitoring is provided through vendor libraries such as FANUC FOCAS, OPC UA servers including those following umati companion specifications, or MTConnect adapters. Cybersecurity of networked controls is addressed in standards such as IEC 62443.
Key points
- Interprets programs, applies offsets and compensation, and interpolates tool motion
- Servo drives close position, velocity and current loops with feedback devices
- An integrated PLC runs machine logic such as tool changers and doors
- Parameters set by the builder govern behaviour and should not be changed casually
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA AI agents let people talk to CNC controllers in plain language; writes to machines are deny-by-default and each proposed change needs a trained operator's confirmation.
