MTConnect

MTConnect is an open, royalty-free standard that defines a common vocabulary and HTTP-based interface for reading data from machine tools and other manufacturing equipment. It is read-only by design.

An MTConnect implementation typically has an adapter that collects data from a machine's control or sensors and translates it, often using the simple SHDR text format, and an agent that publishes the data as structured XML or JSON documents over HTTP. Client applications request a probe document describing the device and its data items, the current values, a sample stream of time-stamped history, or asset information such as cutting tool data.

The standard's semantic data dictionary gives consistent names and meanings to items such as controller mode, execution state, program, part count, axis positions, spindle speed and alarms, so software can work across machines from different builders. It is maintained by the MTConnect Institute, has been published as an ANSI standard, and an OPC UA companion specification for MTConnect also exists.

MTConnect is read-only: it carries data from equipment to applications and does not define commands back to the machine, which limits the risk of unintended control actions. Data quality depends on the adapter and what the control exposes, so mappings should be verified per machine. Agents sit on plant networks and should be protected with segmentation and access control.

Key points

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to CNC, PLC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, and a trained operator confirms each one.
