CNC Machine Monitoring

CNC machine monitoring collects data such as machine state, program, part count, spindle load, overrides and alarms from CNC machines, through control interfaces or added sensors, to show utilisation and support improvement.

Monitoring systems connect to controls through interfaces such as FANUC FOCAS, OPC UA servers including umati-based models, MTConnect agents or the machine PLC, and for older machines through retrofit sensors such as current sensors or stack-light signals. Data are time-stamped, mapped to consistent states such as running, idle, stopped and in alarm, and stored for dashboards, reports and analysis.

Shops use monitoring to see actual utilisation, identify downtime causes, compare shifts and machines, track part counts and cycle times, and provide data for OEE calculations, MES and maintenance planning. Spindle load and alarm data also support tool condition monitoring and faster troubleshooting.

Useful results depend on clear state definitions, accurate time synchronisation and operator input for downtime reasons that machines cannot detect. Read-only access is preferred, and any write capability needs strict control. Connecting CNC controls to networks should follow OT security practice, including segmentation and controlled remote access, as described in IEC 62443.
