Motion Control
Motion control is the branch of automation that precisely governs the position, velocity and torque of machine axes, coordinating one or more motors along defined trajectories using controllers, drives and feedback devices.
A motion system consists of a motion controller, which plans trajectories, drives or amplifiers, motors and feedback devices such as encoders. The controller generates position commands at a fixed cycle, respecting limits on speed, acceleration and jerk, and sends them over a deterministic network to the drives, which close the control loops. Functions range from single-axis point-to-point moves to electronic gearing, electronic cams, synchronised multi-axis interpolation and coordinated kinematics.
Motion control is fundamental to packaging, converting, printing, labelling, pick-and-place, machine tools, semiconductor equipment and robotics. Electronic cams and gearing replace mechanical cams, line shafts and gearboxes, allowing product formats to change through software rather than mechanical changeover. PLCopen Motion Control function blocks standardise common motion commands across IEC 61131-3 platforms.
Performance depends on mechanical stiffness, backlash, load inertia, feedback resolution and network cycle time, as well as controller tuning. Engineers evaluate following error, settling time and repeatability. Moving machinery creates hazards, so motion systems must be integrated with guarding and safety functions such as Safe Torque Off or safely limited speed, designed to standards like ISO 13849 or IEC 62061 and validated by qualified personnel.
Key points
- Controls position, velocity and torque of one or many axes
- Trajectory planning respects speed, acceleration and jerk limits
- Electronic gearing and cams replace mechanical transmissions
- PLCopen Motion Control blocks standardise motion commands
- Must integrate with guarding and drive safety functions
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
