Servo Drive and Servo Motor
A servo drive is an amplifier that controls a servo motor's position, speed and torque in a closed loop using feedback from an encoder or resolver, enabling the fast, precise and repeatable movements needed in automated machinery.
A servo system consists of a motor, typically a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, a feedback device and a drive. The drive runs nested control loops, a current or torque loop, a velocity loop and often a position loop, with the inner loops updated far faster than a typical PLC scan. It compares commanded and actual values and adjusts motor current to correct errors, achieving high dynamic response and accurate positioning.
Servo systems drive axes in packaging machines, robots, CNC machine tools, pick-and-place equipment, printing, labelling and electronics assembly. Commands come from a motion controller, PLC or CNC over deterministic networks such as EtherCAT, PROFINET IRT, SERCOS III or EtherNet/IP with CIP Motion, or as pulse and direction signals.
Sizing considers load inertia, required torque and speed profiles, duty cycle and the ratio between load and motor inertia, which affects stability. Tuning the loops balances responsiveness against vibration and noise, and many drives provide auto-tuning. Safety functions such as Safe Torque Off are often built into drives, but they must be designed and validated within the machine's overall safety concept, following OEM documentation and applicable standards.
Key points
- Closed-loop control of position, speed and torque using motor feedback
- Nested current, velocity and position loops run inside the drive
- Commanded over deterministic networks or pulse and direction signals
- Sizing depends on inertia, torque, speed profile and duty cycle
- Built-in safety functions must fit the machine's overall safety concept
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, a trained operator confirms each one, and the AI Factory never replaces a machine's control or safety systems.
