Cartesian Robot (Gantry Robot)
A Cartesian robot moves its tool along three linear axes at right angles, X, Y and Z, often on an overhead gantry, giving a rectangular work envelope, simple programming and high rigidity for handling, dispensing and machine loading.
Each axis is a linear actuator, typically driven by a ball screw, belt, rack and pinion or linear motor, so the tool position maps directly onto the axis coordinates without complex kinematics. A rotary axis can be added at the tool. Gantry versions support the axes on both sides, which allows long spans and heavy payloads.
Cartesian and gantry robots load and unload machine tools and presses, transfer parts between stations, dispense adhesives and sealants, palletise heavy loads and handle panels, glass and timber. Large gantries can cover areas far beyond the reach of an articulated arm.
Limitations include a large footprint relative to the work volume and a limited ability to reach around obstacles or orient the tool. Design choices cover axis length, speed, accuracy, drive type and structural stiffness. Control is often by a PLC or motion controller rather than a dedicated robot controller, and overhead loads and moving axes require guarding based on a risk assessment.
Key points
- Three orthogonal linear axes give a rectangular work envelope
- Simple kinematics: axis positions map directly to tool coordinates
- Gantry designs span large areas and carry heavy payloads
- Often controlled by a PLC or motion controller
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to robot controllers in plain language. Robotics perception is an AiAmbA use case, and robot safety functions follow ISO 10218 and never depend on the AI layer.
