Automotive Paint Shop

The automotive paint shop applies the protective and decorative coatings to the car body, typically pretreatment, electrocoat, sealing, primer, basecoat and clearcoat, with curing ovens between stages and inspection at the end.

The body-in-white is first cleaned and given a conversion coating in pretreatment, then dipped in an electrocoat tank for corrosion protection and cured. Seam sealers and underbody coatings are applied, followed by primer, a coloured basecoat and a protective clearcoat. Robots with electrostatic rotary bell atomisers apply most paint, and many plants use waterborne basecoats to reduce solvent emissions. Some compact processes apply layers wet-on-wet to remove an oven stage.

The paint finish protects the body against corrosion for the vehicle's life and gives its colour and gloss, which customers judge immediately. Paint shops must handle many colours in production sequence while keeping consistent appearance.

Paint shops are among the largest energy users in a vehicle plant because of ovens and air-conditioned spray booths, which need tightly controlled temperature, humidity and cleanliness. Bodies are inspected for defects such as dirt, craters, runs and orange peel, and repaired where needed. Solvent emissions, wastewater and fire and explosion risks are governed by environmental and hazardous-area regulations.
