Electrocoating (E-Coat, Cathodic Electrodeposition)

Electrocoating is a painting process in which a conductive part, such as a car body, is immersed in a waterborne paint bath and a direct current deposits a uniform paint film, including inside cavities, before the film is cured in an oven.

In cathodic electrodeposition, the dominant automotive process, the body acts as the cathode and electrodes in the tank act as anodes. When voltage is applied, charged paint particles migrate to the body and coagulate on its surface. The deposited film is electrically insulating, so current shifts to uncoated areas, carrying the coating into recesses and box sections; this ability is called throwpower. After leaving the tank, the body is rinsed, with ultrafiltration recovering paint solids from the rinse, and the film is baked.

E-coat provides the primary corrosion protection of vehicle bodies, because it reaches internal surfaces that spraying cannot, and gives a uniform base for the following paint layers. It is also widely used for chassis parts, appliances and other metal products.

Bath solids, pH, conductivity, temperature, voltage and immersion time must be controlled to achieve the specified film thickness. Typical defects include craters from contamination, pinholes, rough or dirty deposits and thin film in cavities, and film build is checked on panels and bodies. The process uses high voltages, and operation and maintenance follow the equipment OEM documentation and electrical safety rules.
