WirelessHART

WirelessHART is a wireless mesh networking protocol for process automation, standardised as IEC 62591 and maintained by the FieldComm Group, that extends the HART protocol to battery-powered and wireless field instruments.

WirelessHART devices form a self-organising, self-healing mesh network in the 2.4 GHz band using IEEE 802.15.4 radios, with time-synchronised, channel-hopping communication to resist interference. A gateway connects the mesh to host systems, a network manager schedules communication and routes, and a security manager handles keys. All traffic is encrypted and authenticated with AES-128, and devices use the same HART command set as wired instruments.

Process plants use WirelessHART to add measurements where cabling is costly or impractical, such as tank farms, rotating equipment, remote wellheads and temporary installations, and to monitor equipment condition, steam traps, safety showers and valve positions. Wireless adapters can also retrofit existing wired HART instruments so that their diagnostic data is transmitted wirelessly.

Update rates and battery life trade against each other, so WirelessHART suits monitoring and slow control loops rather than fast or safety-critical control. Network design should ensure adequate mesh density and multiple paths to the gateway. ISA100.11a, standardised as IEC 62734, is an alternative industrial wireless standard also based on IEEE 802.15.4.
