Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN)
A low-power wide-area network is a class of wireless technologies designed to connect battery-powered devices over long distances at low data rates, allowing sensors to send small amounts of data while running on batteries for long periods.
LPWAN technologies trade data rate for range and energy efficiency. Devices transmit short messages infrequently and spend most of their time in deep sleep, while robust modulation and narrow bandwidths let signals travel kilometres in open areas and penetrate buildings. Technologies divide into those using unlicensed spectrum, such as LoRaWAN, and cellular standards in licensed spectrum defined by 3GPP, namely NB-IoT and LTE-M.
In industry and utilities, LPWAN connects sensors that are widely spread, hard to wire or battery-powered: tank levels, water and gas meters, environmental monitoring, asset tracking, temperature and simple vibration indicators, and the status of remote equipment. It is suited to monitoring rather than control, since latency is high and data rates are low.
Choosing a technology involves coverage, whether a public network or a private deployment is used, licensing and subscription costs, battery life targets, message size and frequency, downlink requirements, mobility and device availability. Regional regulations govern unlicensed bands, including duty cycle limits in some regions. Security, device provisioning and long-term network availability should be evaluated before large deployments.
Key points
- Wireless technologies optimised for range and battery life
- Low data rates and infrequent short messages
- Unlicensed options include LoRaWAN; cellular options are NB-IoT and LTE-M
- Suited to monitoring, not real-time control
- Regional rules govern the use of unlicensed bands
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA IoT is AiVibe's edge protocol layer: it discovers devices and normalises industrial signals, with supported protocols including Siemens S7, Mitsubishi MC, Delta Modbus, OPC UA and MQTT, and driver availability confirmed per installation. Writes to machines are deny-by-default.
