LTE-M (LTE-MTC)

LTE-M is a 3GPP cellular low-power wide-area technology, introduced in Release 13 as LTE Cat-M1, that offers higher data rates, lower latency and better mobility than NB-IoT while retaining power-saving features for battery devices.

LTE-M operates within LTE networks using a reduced bandwidth of 1.4 MHz, which simplifies device modules compared with standard LTE. It supports full mobility with handover between cells, voice over LTE on suitable devices, and data rates suitable for firmware updates and richer telemetry. Like NB-IoT, it supports power saving mode (PSM) and extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) to extend battery life, and coverage enhancement techniques improve indoor reach.

LTE-M suits asset trackers, fleet and logistics devices, wearables, alarm panels, payment terminals and industrial equipment that moves or needs more frequent communication than NB-IoT supports. Because it uses existing LTE infrastructure, coverage is available wherever operators have enabled it, and many modules support both LTE-M and NB-IoT.

Operator support for LTE-M and NB-IoT differs by country, so coverage and roaming should be confirmed before deployment. Both technologies form part of the 5G massive machine-type communication path in 3GPP, which helps protect long-term investments. Battery life, latency and throughput depend on network configuration and device design, and remote management protocols such as LwM2M support provisioning and over-the-air updates.
