Industrial IoT Gateway
An industrial IoT gateway is a device that connects machines, PLCs and sensors to higher-level systems, translating industrial protocols, buffering data and forwarding it securely to SCADA, MES, unified namespaces or cloud platforms.
A gateway has interfaces on the plant side, such as serial ports, industrial Ethernet and digital or analogue I/O, and on the upstream side, such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi or cellular. Software drivers poll or subscribe to field devices using protocols such as Modbus, S7, EtherNet/IP or OPC UA, map raw addresses to named tags, apply scaling and timestamps, and publish the data through OPC UA, MQTT or REST interfaces. Many gateways also buffer data during outages and run edge applications.
Gateways are the usual way to bring older machines into IIoT architectures without modifying their controllers, and to bridge networks that should not be directly connected. They are used for machine monitoring, energy metering, remote diagnostics and feeding historians, MES and cloud analytics. Industrial models are rated for extended temperature ranges, DIN-rail mounting and electrical noise.
Key selection criteria include supported drivers, tag capacity, polling performance, security features such as secure boot, encrypted storage and certificate management, remote management and update mechanisms, and the vendor's support life. Gateways that can write to controllers need strict controls, and read-only configurations are preferable where writes are not required. Placement should follow OT segmentation guidance such as IEC 62443 and the Purdue model.
Key points
- Connects field devices to SCADA, MES and cloud systems
- Translates protocols and maps raw addresses to named tags
- Buffers data during network outages
- Enables retrofits without changing controller programs
- Write access needs strict control; read-only is preferable
Where AiVibe comes in
Existing lines are retrofitted with AiAmbA edge devices, and AiAmbA IoT discovers devices and normalises their industrial signals, with writes to machines deny-by-default.
