Robotic Gripper

A robotic gripper is an end effector that grasps, holds and releases objects, using fingers or jaws driven pneumatically, electrically or hydraulically, or using suction, magnetism or soft compliant materials.

Mechanical grippers include parallel grippers, whose jaws move in a straight line, angular grippers, whose jaws pivot, and three-finger centring grippers for round parts. Fingers are often custom-machined to match the part. Pneumatic grippers are simple and strong, while electric grippers allow programmable position, force and speed and can report whether a part was gripped. Other types include vacuum, magnetic, needle and soft grippers made of flexible materials.

Grippers are used in machine tending, assembly, packaging, palletising, laboratory automation and bin picking. The choice depends on part geometry, mass, surface, fragility, required accuracy and cycle time. Multi-fingered dexterous hands are mainly found in research and on humanoid robots.

Grip force must hold the part under acceleration without damaging it, and engineers consider what happens on loss of air or power, for example by choosing spring-loaded or self-locking designs. Part-present sensing confirms a successful grasp. In collaborative applications, gripping force and finger geometry are assessed as part of the contact risks.

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to robot controllers in plain language. Robotics perception is an AiAmbA use case, and robot safety functions follow ISO 10218 and never depend on the AI layer.
