Remaining Useful Life (RUL)

Remaining useful life is the estimated time or usage left before an asset or component can no longer perform its function to the required standard, given its current condition and expected future operating conditions.

RUL estimation, often called prognostics, combines information about an asset's current health with models of how degradation progresses. Approaches include physics-based models of damage mechanisms such as fatigue crack growth or wear, data-driven models that learn degradation patterns from condition monitoring data, and reliability-based estimates from the life distributions of similar assets. Results are usually expressed as time or cycles remaining, ideally with an uncertainty range.

RUL is the step that turns condition monitoring into predictive maintenance: knowing how long an asset can continue allows maintenance, spares and production to be planned around the predicted end of life. It is applied to bearings, gearboxes, batteries, cutting tools, turbine components and structures. In aerospace and defence, the wider discipline is known as prognostics and health management.

RUL estimates are uncertain because future loads, environment and failure mechanisms are not fully known, and data-driven models need training data that include real degradation to failure, which is often limited. Predictions should be updated as new data arrive and validated against actual outcomes. Decisions on safety-critical assets must stay within limits set by the OEM documentation, applicable standards and qualified engineers. ISO 13381-1 gives general guidelines on prognostics in machine condition monitoring.
