P-F Curve and P-F Interval

The P-F curve shows how an asset's condition declines from the point at which a developing failure can first be detected, the potential failure P, to the point of functional failure F; the time between the two is the P-F interval.

Many failure modes develop gradually. At some point, a defect such as a bearing flaw, insulation breakdown or wear becomes detectable by a monitoring technique; this is the potential failure. As degradation continues, the equipment eventually can no longer perform its function, which is the functional failure. Illustrations of the curve commonly show techniques such as ultrasound and vibration analysis detecting problems earlier than rising temperature or audible noise. The P-F interval is the warning time between P and F, and it differs by failure mode and by detection technique.

The concept, central to reliability-centred maintenance, determines whether condition-based maintenance is feasible and how often inspections are needed. To catch a failure in time, the inspection interval must be shorter than the P-F interval, and a common rule of thumb sets it at no more than half the P-F interval, leaving time to plan and carry out corrective work. Continuous monitoring is used where the interval is short or the consequences of failure are severe.

P-F intervals are difficult to measure and are usually estimated from experience, manufacturer guidance and condition monitoring history. They vary with operating conditions and failure severity. Some failure modes, particularly in electronics, give little or no detectable warning, in which case condition-based maintenance is not suitable and other strategies are needed.
