Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM)
Condition-based maintenance is a strategy in which maintenance is performed when measured indicators of equipment condition show signs of deterioration or approaching failure, rather than at fixed intervals.
CBM relies on monitoring parameters that reflect the health of an asset, such as vibration, temperature, pressure, oil quality, electrical current or wear measurements, either continuously with installed sensors or periodically with portable instruments and inspections. When a parameter crosses an alert or action threshold, or trends towards one, maintenance is planned. EN 13306 treats condition-based maintenance as a form of preventive maintenance that includes assessment of physical condition, analysis and any resulting maintenance actions.
CBM is applied to rotating machinery, electrical assets, hydraulic systems, filters, belts and tools, wherever deterioration can be measured before failure. Predictive maintenance is often regarded as a form of CBM that goes further by forecasting when a threshold will be reached. Benefits include fewer unnecessary interventions than fixed intervals and earlier warning of developing faults.
CBM requires a measurable indicator that changes reliably before failure, with enough warning time for planning, and the P-F interval determines how often periodic checks must be made. Thresholds should be based on standards, OEM guidance or baseline data. ISO 17359 gives general guidelines for condition monitoring, and the ISO 13374 series covers data processing, communication and presentation for condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines.
Key points
- Maintenance is triggered by measured condition rather than fixed intervals.
- Uses continuous sensors or periodic inspections and measurements.
- Requires indicators that change reliably before failure.
- Predictive maintenance extends CBM by forecasting time to threshold.
