Reference Architectural Model Industrie 4.0 (RAMI 4.0)
RAMI 4.0 is a three-dimensional reference architecture developed in Germany for Industry 4.0 that maps an asset's architecture layers, its life cycle and value stream, and its position in the factory hierarchy within one common model.
RAMI 4.0 was developed by Germany's Plattform Industrie 4.0 together with industry associations and published as DIN SPEC 91345. It describes any asset, such as a machine, a product or a piece of software, along three axes. The vertical axis has six layers: asset, integration, communication, information, functional and business. A second axis follows the life cycle and value stream, distinguishing a type, such as a product design, from its instances, the individual items made. The third axis covers hierarchy levels derived from IEC 62264 and IEC 61512, extended from product and field device up to enterprise and the connected world.
The model gives manufacturers, machine builders and software suppliers a shared vocabulary for locating standards, interfaces and responsibilities. It is used to structure Industry 4.0 projects, to identify which standards apply at which layer, and to explain how a physical asset is represented digitally, for example through the Asset Administration Shell concept developed by the same platform.
RAMI 4.0 is a reference model, not an implementation guide or product specification, so it does not prescribe particular technologies. It is most useful early in a project to align stakeholders and map existing systems. Its hierarchy axis relates closely to the ISA-95 enterprise-control model, which IEC 62264 standardises internationally.
Key points
- Published in Germany as DIN SPEC 91345 by Plattform Industrie 4.0 and partner associations.
- Three axes: architecture layers, life cycle and value stream, and hierarchy levels.
- Six layers run from asset and integration up to functional and business.
- Hierarchy levels extend IEC 62264 and IEC 61512 up to the connected world.
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
