Cyber-Physical System (CPS)
A cyber-physical system is an engineered system in which computation, networking and physical processes are tightly integrated, with computers monitoring and controlling physical processes through sensors and actuators in feedback loops.
In a cyber-physical system, sensors measure the state of a physical process, embedded or networked computers process that information, and actuators act on the process, usually in closed feedback loops where the physical behaviour in turn affects the computation. The term came into wide use in the mid-2000s through research funded by the National Science Foundation in the United States, and it became a foundational concept of Industry 4.0. CPS typically involve networks of interacting components rather than a single standalone controller.
Examples include automated production cells, robots, smart electricity grids, autonomous vehicles, medical devices and building automation. In manufacturing, machines whose controllers, drives and sensors also exchange data with plant and enterprise systems are often described as cyber-physical production systems. Their data enables monitoring, optimisation and digital twins, while their control functions keep processes within limits.
Designing CPS requires attention to timing, reliability and safety, because software faults or network delays can have physical consequences. Security is especially important, since an attack on the cyber layer can cause physical damage or hazards. NIST has published a framework for cyber-physical systems, and security for industrial automation and control systems is addressed by the IEC 62443 series. Functional safety is handled by dedicated safety systems designed to standards such as IEC 61508.
Key points
- Integrates computation, networking and physical processes through sensors, controllers and actuators.
- Operates in feedback loops where physical behaviour and software continually influence each other.
- A foundational concept of Industry 4.0 and cyber-physical production systems.
- Faults or attacks in the cyber layer can have physical consequences, so safety and security matter.
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
