ISO 10218 (Industrial Robot Safety)

ISO 10218 is the international safety standard for industrial robots. Part 1 covers safety requirements for the robot itself, and Part 2 covers robot applications, cells and their integration, including safeguarding and collaborative applications.

ISO 10218-1 addresses robot manufacturers, with requirements such as stopping functions, reduced speed in manual mode, enabling devices, axis limiting and the performance of safety-related control systems. ISO 10218-2 addresses integrators and users, covering cell layout, safeguarding, risk assessment, collaborative operation, commissioning and information for use. It is a type-C machinery standard that builds on ISO 12100 for risk assessment and on functional safety standards such as ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061.

ISO 10218 is adopted regionally, for example as harmonised EN ISO 10218 in Europe and through the R15.06 standard in the United States. Integrators use it alongside ISO/TS 15066 for collaborative applications and with other machinery standards covering guards, safety distances and interlocks.

The standard has been revised over time, so the edition in force in each jurisdiction should be confirmed. Compliance applies to the complete robot application, not only the robot. Safety functions must be implemented in safety-related control systems that meet the required performance, and their configuration and validation are work for qualified personnel following OEM documentation.
