X-bar and R Chart

An X-bar and R chart is a pair of variables control charts that monitors the average and the range of small subgroups of measurements, showing whether a process's centre and short-term spread are stable over time.

At regular intervals, a small subgroup of consecutive parts, often four or five, is measured. The X-bar chart plots each subgroup mean and the R chart plots each subgroup range, the difference between the largest and smallest values. The centre lines are the grand average and the average range. Control limits use tabulated constants that depend on subgroup size: the X-bar limits are the grand average plus or minus A2 times the average range, and the R chart limits are D3 and D4 times the average range.

The X-bar and R chart is one of the most widely used SPC tools in discrete manufacturing, for characteristics such as diameters, lengths, fill weights and torque. The R chart is interpreted first, because the X-bar limits depend on the average range; if the spread is unstable, the X-bar limits are not reliable. The within-subgroup variation it captures is also used to estimate the short-term standard deviation for capability indices such as Cp and Cpk.

Subgroups should be rational, meaning parts within a subgroup are made under essentially the same conditions, so that differences between subgroups reveal process changes. For larger subgroups, commonly above about ten, the X-bar and S chart, which uses the standard deviation instead of the range, is usually preferred. When only one measurement per interval is available, an individuals and moving range chart is used instead.

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
