Western Electric Rules

The Western Electric rules are decision rules for control charts that flag a likely special cause not only when a point falls beyond a control limit but also when patterns of points suggest the process is no longer behaving randomly.

The rules were published by the Western Electric Company in its Statistical Quality Control Handbook. The chart is divided into zones at one, two and three standard deviations from the centre line. The four main rules signal when one point falls beyond three standard deviations; two out of three consecutive points fall beyond two standard deviations on the same side; four out of five consecutive points fall beyond one standard deviation on the same side; or eight consecutive points fall on the same side of the centre line.

These supplementary rules increase a chart's sensitivity to small shifts, trends and cycles that a single three-sigma limit would detect slowly. They are built into most SPC software and are used in manufacturing, laboratories and process industries. Lloyd Nelson later published a related set of eight rules, known as the Nelson rules, which add tests for trends, such as six points in a row steadily increasing or decreasing, and for alternating or stratified patterns.

Each additional rule raises the probability of false alarms on a stable process, so organisations usually choose a defined subset and apply it consistently. The rules assume approximately normal, independent data; autocorrelated processes, common in continuous processing, can trigger frequent false signals. Run lengths differ between published rule sets, so the set in use should be documented in procedures or the control plan.

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
