Unified Namespace (UNS)
A unified namespace is an IIoT architectural pattern in which a central, hierarchically organised data hub, often an MQTT broker, holds the current state of a business so that every system publishes to and consumes from one shared structure.
In a unified namespace, machines, PLCs, MES, ERP, quality and maintenance systems publish data and events into a single topic hierarchy, typically structured by enterprise, site, area, line and cell in the manner of the ISA-95 equipment model. Consumers subscribe to what they need instead of building point-to-point integrations with each source. The hub usually holds the latest value of each item, while historians and data platforms store the history.
The pattern aims to replace tightly coupled, layer-by-layer integrations with an event-driven hub that new applications can join without changes to existing systems. It is commonly implemented with MQTT brokers, sometimes with Sparkplug B payloads, and with edge gateways that translate machine protocols into the namespace. The term was popularised in the manufacturing community by Walker Reynolds and describes a design approach rather than a formal standard.
Success depends on governance: agreed naming conventions, payload schemas, units, timestamps and ownership of each part of the hierarchy. Without this, a namespace can become as inconsistent as the systems it replaces. Access control, broker availability and separation between OT and IT zones must be designed carefully, and write paths back to machines need far stricter controls than read paths.
Key points
- Single shared hierarchy holding the current state of the business
- Usually structured along the ISA-95 equipment hierarchy
- Commonly built on MQTT brokers, sometimes with Sparkplug B
- An architectural pattern, not a formal standard
- Needs governance of naming, schemas, units and ownership
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA IoT is AiVibe's edge protocol layer: it discovers devices and normalises industrial signals, with supported protocols including Siemens S7, Mitsubishi MC, Delta Modbus, OPC UA and MQTT, and driver availability confirmed per installation. Writes to machines are deny-by-default.
