Software as a Service (SaaS)
Software as a service (SaaS) is a cloud service model in which a provider hosts and maintains a complete application that customers use over the internet on a subscription basis, without installing or managing the software themselves.
Software as a service (SaaS) is the cloud service model in which a provider hosts a complete application and delivers it to users over the internet, usually through a web browser or API. The provider runs and maintains the infrastructure, platform and application, including upgrades, while customers configure the software and manage their own users and data. Most SaaS products are multi-tenant, serving many customer organisations from a shared code base.
Common examples include email and office suites, customer relationship management, human resources systems and industrial applications such as hosted maintenance management or quality systems. Organisations adopt SaaS to avoid installing and patching software, to pay through subscriptions instead of perpetual licences and to give distributed teams the same application anywhere.
Key considerations are data location, integration through APIs, export options at contract end, availability commitments in the service level agreement and identity integration through single sign-on. Under the shared responsibility model, the customer still owns user access, data classification and configuration choices, which are frequent sources of exposure. Independent attestations such as SOC 2 reports and ISO/IEC 27001 certification are commonly reviewed during supplier assessments.
Key points
- The provider manages infrastructure, platform, application and upgrades
- Customers remain responsible for user access, data and configuration settings
- Usually multi-tenant and billed by subscription rather than perpetual licence
- Supplier reviews often check SOC 2 reports and ISO/IEC 27001 certification
