Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Platform as a service (PaaS) is a cloud service model that provides a managed environment for developing and running applications, so customers deploy code while the provider runs the servers, operating systems and runtimes.

Platform as a service (PaaS) is the cloud service model in which the provider supplies a managed runtime for building, deploying and running applications. The provider operates the servers, operating systems, language runtimes and often databases and messaging, while the customer supplies application code and configuration. In the NIST SP 800-145 definition, the consumer controls deployed applications and hosting-environment settings but not the underlying network, servers, operating systems or storage.

PaaS shortens delivery time because developers can push code without building and patching servers. Typical offerings include application platforms such as Heroku, Azure App Service, Google App Engine and AWS Elastic Beanstalk, along with managed databases and integration services. Teams use PaaS for web applications, APIs and internal business tools where standard runtimes are sufficient.

The trade-off is reduced control: supported languages, runtime versions, networking options and scaling behaviour are set by the platform, and moving to another provider can require rework. Security responsibilities shift towards the provider for the platform layer, but application code, identity, data protection and configuration remain with the customer.
