Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a data-driven quality improvement methodology that reduces process variation and defects through statistical tools and structured projects, with a long-term performance target often stated as 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

Six Sigma was developed at Motorola in the 1980s, with engineer Bill Smith widely credited as a key originator, and was later adopted prominently by companies such as AlliedSignal and General Electric. The name refers to a process whose nearest specification limit lies six standard deviations from the mean. Allowing for a conventional long-term shift of 1.5 standard deviations in the process mean, such a process produces about 3.4 defects per million opportunities. Projects follow DMAIC for existing processes, or design for Six Sigma roadmaps such as DMADV for new ones.

Six Sigma organisations train people to defined belt levels, such as Green Belts who run projects part-time, Black Belts who lead projects full-time and Master Black Belts who coach and train, supported by executive champions. Projects are selected for business impact and use tools such as process mapping, measurement system analysis, hypothesis testing, regression, design of experiments and statistical process control. Many companies combine it with lean as Lean Six Sigma, pairing variation reduction with waste and flow improvement.

The 1.5 sigma shift is an empirical convention rather than a law, and a sigma level is a simplified summary of performance. Six Sigma needs reliable data and capable measurement systems, and can become bureaucratic if certifications and project counts become goals in themselves. ISO 13053 describes the DMAIC methodology for quantitative process improvement.

Key points

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
