Defects per Million Opportunities (DPMO)
Defects per million opportunities is a Six Sigma quality metric that expresses the number of defects relative to the number of chances for a defect to occur, scaled to one million, allowing comparison between products of different complexity.
DPMO equals the number of defects divided by the product of units inspected and opportunities per unit, multiplied by one million. An opportunity is a distinct characteristic that could be defective, such as each solder joint on a circuit board or each critical dimension on a part. For example, 25 defects found on 500 boards with 100 opportunities each gives 500 DPMO. DPMO can be converted to a sigma level using standard tables, which conventionally include a 1.5 sigma shift, so 3.4 DPMO corresponds to six sigma.
DPMO is used to compare processes and products of different complexity on a common scale, to set improvement targets and to track Six Sigma projects. It is common in electronics assembly, where products have many solder joints and components, and in transactional processes such as order handling. Related measures include defects per unit, and parts per million defective, which counts defective units rather than defects.
DPMO is sensitive to how opportunities are defined: counting trivial characteristics inflates the denominator and makes performance look better. Organisations should define opportunities consistently and count only characteristics that matter to the customer. Because a single unit can contain several defects, DPMO and the share of defective units are different measures and should not be mixed.
Key points
- DPMO equals defects divided by units times opportunities, times one million.
- Normalises defect rates for products of different complexity.
- 3.4 DPMO corresponds to six sigma using the conventional 1.5 sigma shift.
- Opportunity definitions must be consistent to avoid misleading results.
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
