Safety Laser Scanner

A safety laser scanner is a safety-rated sensor that sweeps a laser beam across a plane and switches its safety outputs when an object enters a configured protective field, used to guard areas around robots, machines and mobile vehicles.

The scanner measures distance by timing reflected laser pulses while a rotating mirror sweeps the beam, producing a two-dimensional view of its surroundings. Users configure protective fields, which trigger a safety stop when entered, and warning fields, which can trigger alarms or slowdowns. Several field sets can be switched during operation, for example as an AGV changes speed. Safety scanners fall under IEC 61496-3, which covers active opto-electronic protective devices responsive to diffuse reflection.

Scanners guard robot cells and machine access areas without fences, implement speed and separation monitoring, detect people in pallet exchange zones and protect the travel path of AGVs and AMRs. Horizontal mounting detects presence in an area, while vertical mounting can guard access openings.

Protective field size must be calculated from the machine stopping time, scanner response time and human approach speed, following ISO 13855. Dust, reflective surfaces and mounting height affect performance. Configuration uses the manufacturer's software with password control and must be validated by qualified personnel.

Where AiVibe comes in

AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory, whose edge devices and AI agents let people talk to robot controllers in plain language. Robotics perception is an AiAmbA use case, and robot safety functions follow ISO 10218 and never depend on the AI layer.
