Ring Spinning

Ring spinning is the yarn-making process in which roving is drafted to the required fineness and twisted by a traveller running around a ring, while the yarn is wound onto a bobbin on a rotating spindle.

The ring frame draws out roving through a drafting system, typically three pairs of rollers with aprons, to reduce it to the required linear density. The drafted fibre strand then passes through a guide to a small traveller that runs on a ring surrounding the spindle. As the spindle rotates, the traveller lags behind it, inserting twist and winding the yarn onto the bobbin. Compact spinning adds a condensing zone, usually pneumatic, after drafting that reduces yarn hairiness.

Ring spinning remains widely used because it produces strong, fine and versatile yarns from many fibres and blends, suitable for high-quality woven and knitted fabrics. The full ring-spinning route includes blowroom, carding, drawing, optional combing, roving, ring spinning and winding onto cones.

Productivity is limited by traveller speed and the need to wind relatively small bobbins, and the process consumes considerable energy. End breaks must be pieced up quickly, so mills use spindle monitoring systems and, increasingly, automatic doffing and piecing. Yarn quality is assessed by count, twist, strength, evenness and hairiness, with test conditions such as the standard atmosphere in ISO 139.
