Rapier Loom
A rapier loom is a shuttleless weaving machine in which rigid or flexible rapiers carry the weft yarn through the shed. It is valued for handling a wide range of yarns and many weft colours.
In the common double-rapier system, a giver rapier enters from one side with the weft yarn and meets a taker rapier from the other side in the middle of the shed, where the yarn is transferred and pulled through to the far side. Flexible rapiers use tapes that wind around a wheel, while rigid rapiers use stiff rods. An electronic weft selector presents the required yarn colour or type to the rapier for each pick.
Rapier looms are highly versatile. They handle fine and coarse yarns, fancy and textured yarns and many weft colours, so they are widely used for fashion fabrics, shirting with coloured patterns, upholstery, furnishing fabrics and technical textiles, often combined with dobby or jacquard shedding.
Weft insertion rates are generally lower than on air-jet looms, but changeovers between styles are simpler and air consumption is low. Rapier heads, grippers and tapes wear and need periodic replacement, and their condition affects weft transfer faults. Settings and maintenance follow the manufacturer's documentation.
Key points
- Rigid or flexible rapiers carry the weft through the shed
- Double-rapier systems transfer the weft in mid-shed
- Handles a wide range of yarns and many weft colours
- Generally slower than air-jet looms but more versatile
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA use cases include visual inspection on textile and automotive lines, predictive maintenance and digital twins. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and AI agents only propose changes for a trained operator to confirm.
