Product Genealogy
Product genealogy is the as-built record of the parent-child relationships between a finished product and the components, sub-assemblies and material lots consumed to make it, typically maintained by a manufacturing execution system.
While a bill of materials defines what a product should contain, genealogy records what it actually contains. Each time a component, sub-assembly or material lot is consumed, the system links its identifier to the serial or lot number of the item being produced, building a tree that can extend through several levels of assembly and back to raw material and supplier lots. Process data such as machine, operator, parameters and test results are often attached to the same record.
Genealogy is central to traceability in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, batteries and medical devices. When a supplier reports a faulty lot, genealogy identifies every finished product containing it; when a field failure occurs, it identifies the component lots and process conditions behind the failed unit. It also supports warranty analysis, regulatory documentation and as-built records for complex products.
Accurate genealogy depends on disciplined scanning or automatic capture at each consumption point, correct handling of partial lots, splits and merges, and records of rework and component replacement. In batch process industries, genealogy must account for blending, where one output lot draws on several input lots. The ISA-95 models, standardised as IEC 62264, describe material lots and sublots for integration between MES and enterprise systems.
Key points
- Records the actual components and lots used in each product.
- Builds a multi-level parent-child tree back to supplier lots.
- Enables precise recalls and field failure investigation.
- Must handle partial lots, splits, merges and rework.
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
