Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

Enterprise resource planning is integrated business software that manages core processes such as finance, procurement, inventory, sales, production planning and human resources on a shared database, giving one consistent view of the organisation.

ERP systems evolved from material requirements planning and manufacturing resource planning systems used to plan materials and capacity. A modern ERP combines modules for accounting, purchasing, inventory and warehouse management, order management, production planning, costing, maintenance and human resources, all sharing master data such as items, bills of materials, routings, customers and suppliers. A transaction in one module, such as a goods receipt, updates the others automatically.

In manufacturing, ERP plans what to make and buy, when and in what quantity, based on demand, inventory and lead times, and records the financial consequences. It typically operates at ISA-95 level 4, exchanging orders, material information and confirmations with manufacturing execution systems at level 3, which handle detailed shop-floor execution. Integration between the two avoids double entry and gives planners accurate information on actual production.

ERP implementations are large organisational projects, and success depends on process design, data quality, training and limiting customisation. ERP planning usually assumes standard lead times and simplified capacity, so detailed finite scheduling is often done in advanced planning and scheduling or MES tools. Interfaces between ERP and shop-floor systems should be designed with security and network segmentation in mind.
