Press Shop (Automotive Stamping)
The press shop is the area of a vehicle plant where sheet steel and aluminium blanks are formed into body panels and structural parts by dies in large presses, through operations such as drawing, trimming, piercing and flanging.
Coils are cut into blanks on blanking lines, and the blanks are formed in a series of die operations. The first draw operation gives the panel its basic shape, and later operations trim excess material, pierce holes, flange edges and restrike features. Large panels are produced on tandem lines, where automation transfers parts between separate presses, or on transfer presses with several die stations in one machine; smaller parts often use progressive dies. Servo presses allow the slide motion to be programmed for each part.
The press shop supplies the body shop with outer panels such as doors, bonnets, roofs, fenders and body sides, whose visible Class A surfaces must be free of marks, and with inner and structural parts made increasingly from high-strength steels and aluminium.
Common forming problems include splits, wrinkles, springback and surface defects such as dents, dings and scratches, so panels are inspected visually and dimensionally. Die maintenance and fast, controlled die changes determine line availability. Press safety is covered by standards such as ISO 16092, and die setting and press maintenance must follow OEM documentation and be performed by qualified personnel.
Key points
- Forms blanks into panels through draw, trim, pierce and flange operations
- Tandem lines, transfer presses and progressive dies are common layouts
- Exterior panels need defect-free Class A surfaces
- Splits, wrinkles, springback and surface marks are typical defects
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA use cases include visual inspection on textile and automotive lines, predictive maintenance and digital twins. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and AI agents only propose changes for a trained operator to confirm.
