OT Network Monitoring

OT network monitoring is the continuous, usually passive, analysis of industrial network traffic to identify assets, learn normal behaviour and detect threats such as unauthorised commands, program changes or new devices.

OT network monitoring is the continuous observation of industrial network traffic to detect threats, misconfigurations and abnormal behaviour. Most OT monitoring platforms work passively, receiving copies of traffic from switch mirror ports or network taps so that they add no load to control networks. They decode industrial protocols, build an inventory of communicating assets and learn normal communication patterns, then raise alerts on deviations such as new devices, unexpected program downloads, firmware changes or commands from unusual sources.

Monitoring fills a gap left by preventive controls: many OT assets cannot run endpoint security agents, and segmentation cannot block every misuse of legitimate paths. Detection tuned to ICS behaviour can reveal reconnaissance, lateral movement and manipulation of controllers, and supports incident response with traffic records. Alerts are typically forwarded to a security operations centre, and frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK for ICS help map detections to known adversary techniques.

Sensor placement determines visibility, so the monitoring design should cover key conduits and control-level traffic, not just the IT boundary. Baselines need tuning with operations staff to separate legitimate engineering work from suspicious activity. Monitoring tools must themselves be hardened and segmented, and any active querying features should be enabled only after testing, because some legacy devices react badly to unexpected traffic.
