OpenTelemetry (OTel)
OpenTelemetry (OTel) is an open-source, vendor-neutral observability framework under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation that standardises how applications generate, collect and export traces, metrics and logs.
OpenTelemetry (OTel) is an open-source observability framework that provides vendor-neutral APIs, SDKs and tools for generating, collecting and exporting telemetry data: traces, metrics and logs. It is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation project formed by merging the earlier OpenTracing and OpenCensus projects. Applications are instrumented once, manually or through automatic instrumentation libraries, and the data can be sent to any compatible back end.
The OpenTelemetry Collector receives, processes and exports telemetry, for example filtering sensitive attributes, sampling traces or sending data to several destinations at once. Data travels over the OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP), which is widely supported by observability platforms and cloud providers. Organisations adopt OpenTelemetry to avoid lock-in to a single monitoring vendor and to get consistent telemetry across languages and teams.
Semantic conventions define standard attribute names, for example for HTTP requests and database calls, so that telemetry from different services can be correlated. The maturity of individual signals and language SDKs varies, so stability status should be checked per component. Instrumentation adds some overhead, and collectors must be sized and secured, since telemetry can contain user identifiers or internal details.
Key points
