OEE Availability
Availability is the OEE factor that measures the share of planned production time in which equipment actually runs, calculated as run time divided by planned production time, so it captures losses from breakdowns, changeovers and other stops.
In OEE, availability starts from planned production time, the time in which the equipment is scheduled to produce. Stop time, such as breakdowns, changeovers, material shortages and waiting for operators, is subtracted to give run time. Availability is run time divided by planned production time. Time that is not scheduled at all, for example a shift that is not staffed, is excluded from OEE but included in TEEP.
Availability losses correspond to two of the six big losses: equipment failures, and setup and adjustments. Improving availability typically involves reducing breakdowns through better maintenance, shortening changeovers with SMED, and removing organisational causes of waiting such as late materials or missing instructions. Recording stop reasons by category and duration shows which causes dominate.
Definitions vary between organisations, particularly whether short stops count as availability or performance losses, and whether planned maintenance and changeovers are treated as planned downtime outside the calculation. Many plants set a minimum stop duration, with shorter stops counted under performance. This OEE factor should not be confused with availability in reliability engineering, which is usually derived from mean time between failures and mean time to repair.
Key points
- Availability equals run time divided by planned production time.
- Captures breakdowns, changeovers, material shortages and other stops.
- Unscheduled time is excluded from OEE but counted in TEEP.
- Rules for short stops and planned downtime must be defined consistently.
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
