GPU Cloud Instance

A GPU cloud instance is a rentable virtual or bare-metal server with one or more graphics processing units attached, used for training and serving machine-learning models and other massively parallel workloads.

A GPU cloud instance is a virtual machine or bare-metal server offered by a cloud provider with one or more graphics processing units attached. GPUs contain thousands of cores optimised for parallel arithmetic, which makes them suited to training and running deep-learning models, scientific simulation, rendering and video processing. Instances are offered in families that differ in GPU model, GPU memory, number of GPUs, CPU, system memory and network bandwidth between nodes.

Organisations rent GPU instances to train or fine-tune models without buying hardware, to serve inference for large language models and computer vision applications, and to handle peaks in demand. Large training jobs use multi-GPU instances connected by high-bandwidth interconnects such as NVIDIA NVLink, combined with fast networking between nodes. Major providers offer NVIDIA-based instances, and some also offer their own accelerators, such as Google TPUs and AWS Trainium and Inferentia.

GPU capacity can be scarce in some regions and is expensive, so teams plan reservations, use spot capacity for interruptible jobs and monitor utilisation closely, since an idle GPU still incurs charges. Software compatibility matters: drivers, CUDA versions and frameworks must match the hardware. Rightsizing means matching GPU memory and throughput to the model, and techniques such as quantisation can let smaller, cheaper GPUs serve a model.
